Black CAP Initiates New Settlement Program for LGBT Newcomers

Black CAP recognizes that many newcomers in Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities identify as LGBT and that many LGBT newcomers are often vulnerable in relation to HIV infection, being under-housed and under-employed, and often face isolation.

In many cases LGBT members of our community come to Canada as refugees because they experience significant persecution due to their sexual orientation. In fact, over the past few years we’ve seen a big influx of LGBT newcomers who need supports and services.

Thanks to increased funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), Black CAP will be hiring an additional settlement counselor who will support LGBT newcomers and provide counseling, referrals, deliver workshops and advocacy for services other services to help them settle in our community. This is the first program of its kind in our community. Stay tuned for more news and information about this program, we look forward to sharing some of the stories of the people we will support through this program.
